Low fades, mid fades, high fades — seamless blending by experienced barbers
A fade is a technique where the hair gradually transitions from longer on top to shorter on the sides and back. The term covers a whole family of styles — from subtle tapers to dramatic skin fades — and it's by far the most popular request at BB's Barbers Penrith. The key to any good fade is the blending. There should be no visible lines, steps or harsh edges between the different lengths.
Andrew and Isaac work through multiple clipper guard lengths, finishing with trimmers and a razor to get that smooth gradient from every angle. It takes a trained eye and a steady hand, and it's something we do dozens of times every week.
All fades follow the same principle — a gradual blend from longer to shorter — but where the fade starts and how far down it goes changes the look considerably.
Not sure which fade suits you? We'll talk it through when you come in and find the right one for your face shape, hair type and lifestyle. For a more detailed comparison, read our skinfade vs taper fade guide.
A fade is the foundation. What you do on top is where the real personality comes through. Popular combinations include:

Fades look their absolute best for about two weeks. After that, the regrowth starts to blur the gradient. Most of our regulars book in every two to three weeks. If you're someone who likes it sharp at all times, two weeks is the sweet spot. If you're a bit more relaxed about it, three weeks still looks good.
Between visits, there's not much to do. The fade handles itself. Just look after the top with whatever product suits your style. We're happy to recommend something when you're in the chair. Read our guide on how to maintain a skinfade between visits.
A low fade starts just above the ears, a mid fade starts at the temples, and a high fade starts near the top of the head. The higher the fade, the more dramatic the contrast. All are £20 at BB's Barbers Penrith.
Most fades look their sharpest for about two weeks. After that, the regrowth starts softening the contrast. We'd recommend booking every two to three weeks to keep it looking clean.
A skin fade blends all the way down to bare skin for a bold, high-contrast look. A taper fade keeps a little more length at the bottom for a subtler, more conservative finish. Both are £20.
