A few simple things make a real difference between trims. Use a dedicated beard wash a couple of times a week rather than regular soap, which strips out the natural oils. A few drops of beard oil each morning keeps the hair soft and the skin underneath healthy. Brush or comb it daily to train the growth direction and spread the oils evenly.
The neckline is where most beards start looking scruffy first. A good rule of thumb is to set it just above your Adam's apple.
